Polish Foreign Minister tells what Ukraine can expect from the NATO summit

May 6, 2024

This was stated by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, RBC-Ukraine reports, citing his interview with RMF24.

"I hope that we will outline practical plans to strengthen Ukraine's security so that in a few years Ukraine can join Euro-Atlantic institutions," Sikorsky added.

The interviewer reminded that Ukraine hopes to hear concrete proposals during the NATO summit, but Sikorsky said that it is not necessary to "create unrealistic expectations that cannot be met."

According to him, defense budgets in Europe are growing, and Poland is a leader. "NATO is the most powerful alliance in world history. It has already won against Russia once. It will win again," the minister said.

When asked when the war might end, Sikorsky replied: "The war can end in five minutes. With one phone call from Putin to Shoigu. This is an aggressive colonial war, and it will end when the aggressor comes to the conclusion that the victims are not worth the ultimate goal. But the aggressor has not yet come to this conclusion."

According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the allies are unlikely to reach a consensus on inviting Ukraine to join the Alliance at the summit in Washington in July. At the same time, he confirmed that Ukraine has a right to be in NATO.

Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanyshyna said that the United States and Germany oppose an official invitation to NATO.
