Austrian Defense Minister Claudia Tanner believes that the European Union should prepare for a possible complete power outage, the risk of which has increased significantly in connection with a full-scale war of Russia against Ukraine.
Tanner said this in an interview with Die Welt.
"The likelihood that there will be a blackout in some parts of the European Union in the near future is very high. The question is not whether it will happen, but when," said the head of the Austrian Defense Ministry.
She recalled that the scenario of a widespread blackout in the EU was predicted by the Austrian military back in 2020, and this risk has increased significantly due to the war in Ukraine.
"For Putin, hacking attacks on Western power systems are a means of hybrid warfare. We should not pretend that this is just a theory. We should prepare for power outages in Austria and in Europe," Tanner stressed.-
The minister said the Austrian armed forces and the Ministry of the Interior are preparing for a possible blackout by conducting joint exercises and public education campaigns.
