Aug 2, 2023

On Wednesday, the electricity transmission system operators of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania signed a synchronization agreement that provides for disconnection from the Russian-controlled system and synchronous connection to the continental European grid.

This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Lithuania.

The agreement between Elering, AST, and Litgrid - Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian grid operators - stipulates that the final disconnection from the Russian system and the transition to the European one will take place in February 2025.

The agreement also stipulates that the Baltic states will jointly withdraw from the BRELL contract concluded with Russian and Belarusian operators in the summer of 2024, six months before the synchronization.

Necessary works, such as the installation of the first synchronous capacitors, and control systems, and the reconstruction of the third line between Estonia and Latvia, will be completed by the agreed date. Other projects of the Baltic transmission system operators will be implemented by the end of 2025 or later.
