US President Joe Biden discussed with his national security team possible strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities. However, he did not give an order.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Axios.
According to the publication, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan provided President Biden with options for a potential US attack on Iran's nuclear facilities. This is the case if the Iranians take steps to create nuclear weapons by January 20. All this happened at a meeting that remained secret a few weeks ago.
Axios notes that a U.S. strike on Iran's nuclear facilities would be a huge gamble on the part of a president who has promised to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, but who also risks passing a new conflict to his successor. According to the sources, Biden did not give the green light for a strike during the meeting and has not done so since.
“Biden and his national security team discussed various options and scenarios during a meeting that took place about a month ago, but the president has not made a final decision,” the report said.
A U.S. official with knowledge of the matter said the White House meeting was not prompted by new intelligence and was not intended to result in a yes or no decision by the president. Instead, it was part of a discussion of “smart scenario planning” for how the U.S. should respond if Iran takes steps such as showing uranium enrichment to 90% purity by January 20.
