U.S. President Joe Biden has welcomed the decision of Kamala Harris, who is to become the Democratic presidential candidate, to choose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential running mate.

He published a statement on his Twitter account.

The President noted that he has known Pawlenty for almost two decades, first as a member of Congress and later as governor, who has proven to be a strong, principled, and effective leader. Biden also noted Walls' long military service.

"They will be the strongest possible defenders of our personal freedoms and our democracy. And they will ensure that America continues to lead the world and play its role as an 'indispensable power,'" Biden wrote.

He urged "all Democrats, and indeed all Americans, who are committed to freedom, democracy, and American leadership" to support Harris and Walls in the upcoming election.

"For every generation of Americans, there is a moment when they need to defend American democracy. This moment has come," Biden said.
