Can the US lift restrictions on Ukraine's use of weapons against Russia?

Aug 13, 2024

Ukraine's decision to enter the territory of the Kursk region was surprising. That is why the United States should be more flexible in its authorizations for the use of weapons provided to Ukraine.

According to an RBC-Ukraine correspondent, this was stated by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham at a briefing in Kyiv.

The RBC-Ukraine correspondent asked Graham whether the United States could lift all bans on the use of American weapons by the Ukrainian military. The senator replied that Ukraine should use weapons in a way that "makes Russia really realize what's going on."

"Long-range artillery allowed Ukraine to go on the offensive and push Russia back. F-16s should be allowed to operate to their maximum advantage to protect Ukraine from invasion. So, the weapons restrictions need to be lifted so that Russia understands what will happen if it continues to try to destroy Ukraine," Graham said.

In his opinion, Ukraine's entry into Russian territory by ground forces was a brilliant and courageous move made by people who were ready to fight for their own freedom.

"So the weapons that we have provided must be used to maximum effect to support this democracy so that it survives this invasion, and these weapons not only help Ukraine but also deter others. If we do this right, other aggressors around the world will be less likely to invade their neighbors if we stand with Ukraine and win," the senator said.
