China should force Russia to end the war in Ukraine - US Ambassador
US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns said that Washington would prefer that Beijing force Russia to end its full-scale war in Ukraine.
According to CNN, Burns said this on Tuesday during a discussion at the Stimson Center, an American think tank specializing in international politics.
"What we want to see from China is pressure on Russia to withdraw its troops (from Ukraine - Ed.) and for Ukraine to get back all of its territory and become fully sovereign again in every aspect of the word," the American diplomat said.
According to Burns, China could push Russia to stop bombing Ukrainian schools, Ukrainian hospitals, and Ukrainian homes.
"We've seen the tremendous loss of life just in the last month or two as a result of brutal Russian air and drone attacks on Ukrainian civilians. So I think that's what we would like, and I'm sure that's what European countries would like, and that's what Ukraine wants from China," he added.
According to the American ambassador, the first phone conversation between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Chinese leader Xi Jinping since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion was a "good first step," but it is unclear whether it will be followed by concrete actions by Beijing.
"We would like China to be much tougher in its advice to the Russians. We would like to see actions aimed at ending the war as soon as possible under conditions that, of course, the Ukrainian government can accept," Burns said.
