Czech EU Presidency supports visa ban for Russians

Aug 10, 2022

On Wednesday, Jan Lipovsky, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, presiding in the Council of the European Union, supported a complete ban on issuing Schengen visas for Russian citizens that was earlier proposed by some EU countries.

Lipovsky said this in a Novinky commentary.

"The Czech Republic has repeatedly raised this issue at meetings in Brussels at the level of prime ministers and foreign ministers and seeks a coordinated approach of the entire European Union," said the head of the Czech Foreign Ministry.

He reminded that the Czech Republic was the first to prohibit issuing visas to citizens of Russia (and then Belarus) back on February 25 in connection with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

"During the Russian aggression, which is still changing its declared borders, you can not talk about normal tourism for Russian citizens. This is an issue of our security, I have long tried to reduce the influence of the Russian secret services on EU territory," Lipavsky added.
