Aug 8, 2024

Starting August 8, Estonia will introduce enhanced customs control at all border crossings with Russia - Narva, Luhamaa and Koidula. The innovations are aimed at preventing sanctioned goods from entering Russia.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to ERR.

The Estonian government states that this measure is necessary to prevent the illegal transit of goods that can be used for military purposes or are cash.

Estonian Minister of Finance Jürgen Ligi noted that most declarations indicate third countries as the destination, but practice shows that the goods remain in Russia.

"Tightened control means that everyone traveling to Russia will have to interact with the Estonian authorities. As for passengers, this will be expressed in visual control and questioning, and in case of suspicion - in additional inspection of personal belongings and the use of X-rays," explained Ligi.

Vehicles will also be subjected to a thorough inspection, with the use of X-rays if necessary. Documents for goods will be checked first, and if necessary, additional inspection, unloading and counting of goods will be carried out.

These measures are aimed at ensuring security and compliance with international sanctions, the Minister emphasized.
