Estonia will significantly expand the restricted zone on the border

Oct 31, 2022

The Estonian Interior Ministry plans to change the width of the border zone running parallel to the eastern border from the current ten meters to 300 meters.

This is reported by portal ERR.

According to the head of the department of border and migration policy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Estonia, Janek Mägi, the need to expand the border strip appeared when the construction of border infrastructure on the eastern border began.

"We realized that the current regulation does not allow us to protect this border well anymore; it is impossible to place all the border infrastructure on ten meters, to patrol, to create normal observation positions there," explained Mägi.

With the change in the border strip, the whole border area, which is twisted now because of natural conditions, will be leveled, and in the future, it will be easier for people to understand where it is forbidden to be.

"From our point of view, what's important is that the line is straight because with zigzags and curves you need a lot more equipment. Also, the zone will be clearly marked and people will understand that there is a state border nearby and you can't go any further," Mägi added.
