EU considers imposing sanctions on Balkan broadcasters Russia Today

Apr 23, 2023

The European Union (EU) is considering imposing sanctions on Russia's state-run media outlet Russia Today (RT) Balkans, which broadcasts programs in Serbian, diplomatic sources told RFE/RL's Balkan service on April 23.

The sources said that the European Commission is in the process of preparing a new package of sanctions against the Kremlin over its aggression against Ukraine.

According to the sources, the preliminary list of new sanctions also includes "expanding the list of media outlets whose broadcasting is banned, including Russia Today Balkans."

The Russian state-owned channel Russia Today (RT) started broadcasting in Serbian in November 2022. This is an online broadcast, i.e. web content.
