EU ministers will seek a quick compromise on ammunition for Ukraine

Apr 24, 2023

EU foreign ministers meeting on April 24 in Luxembourg will seek a quick compromise on the procedure for jointly ordering ammunition for Ukraine from defense companies, as everyone understands the urgency of this issue.

This was stated in Luxembourg before the meeting by EU High Representative Josep Borrell, Ukrinform reports.

"I spoke with (Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro - ed.) Kuleba about two ways (to provide ammunition - ed.). The first one is already being implemented. We have received requests for compensation worth 600 million euros. I can't tell you exactly how much ammunition is included in these 600 million euros and in what condition, but I have received a request to pay this amount," Borrell said.

He noted that there are indeed disagreements around the second way – on the procedure for joint ordering of ammunition at defense companies.

"Everyone realizes that we are in a situation of extreme necessity. I am confident that we will reach an agreement quickly. But keep in mind that while we are looking for this legal solution, we are not sitting around waiting. All the work is ongoing, so as soon as this political agreement is reached, the practical work will be done," the EU High Representative added.

Answering a question from the press about the introduction of EU sanctions against Russia's nuclear sector, Borrell said that ministers would not consider sanctions today.

"We are not in a position to finalize the new package of sanctions against Russia, we will continue this discussion," he said.
