Aug 9, 2024

The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, reaffirmed the EU's condemnation of the Lukashenka regime and called for the release of all political prisoners.

According to Yevropeiska Pravda, Borrell made the statement on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the fraudulent presidential election in Belarus on August 9, 2020.

The EU's top diplomat recalled the large-scale protests against election fraud in Belarus, to which the Lukashenka regime "responded with a massive campaign of violence and intimidation against its own people."

"Currently, there are about 1400 political prisoners in detention. They are only a fraction of the thousands of people who have been imprisoned and released for political reasons since 2020," Borrell reminded, noting that at least six political prisoners have died in Belarusian prisons.

In addition, he emphasized that Lukashenko's regime is complicit in Russia's illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, as a result of which "Belarusian sovereignty and identity are increasingly under threat."
