"Therefore, French citizens are officially advised to refrain from traveling to Iran for any reason," it added, urging their compatriots to "stay away from any demonstrations."

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not specify the number of French people who may be affected by this recommendation.

This week, it became known that Ismail Ghaniyeh, the political leader of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, was assassinated in Tehran. Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah accused Israel of the murder.
