Germany is ready to provide Ukraine with Taurus, but on one condition

Aug 11, 2023

The German government is exploring the possibility of supplying Ukraine with long-range Taurus cruise missiles in the coming months. At the same time, Chancellor Olaf Scholz wants to modify the missiles so that Ukrainian troops cannot strike at Russian territory.

This was reported by Spiegel.

According to the publication, classified negotiations with representatives of the defense industry are currently underway on this issue, as Chancellor Olaf Scholz wants to make technical modifications to the missiles to prevent the Armed Forces from striking Russian territory that does not include the temporarily occupied Crimea.

It is noted that the head of the German government is "very concerned" about the escalation of the war, while the office of Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has asked the Taurus manufacturer to integrate a corresponding restriction for target programming into the missiles.

According to Spiegel, Scholz will not approve the delivery of the missiles until he is convinced of their technical modification. It is noted that such a limitation of the system is quite possible, but it will take several weeks.

Sources say that while earlier the German chancellor was ready to provide Taurus only if the United States transferred its long-range ATACMS missiles to Kyiv, this condition no longer plays a major role.
