Germany may transfer up to 15 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine this year

Jan 17, 2023

If the German government decides to supply Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine in the near future, it will be able to transfer from 10 to 15 refurbished tanks by the end of 2023.

This was reported to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper by sources in the defense sector.

The sources said that delivery is possible as early as October or November 2023, but only if orders are placed immediately. If after the decision of the German government "everything possible will be done," they added, one Leopard 2 per week could be delivered from the third quarter.

The FAZ also learned that Germany is now considering supplying Ukraine with 29 more Leopard 2 tanks, which are now destined for Slovakia and the Czech Republic. But the governments in Prague and Bratislava would have to agree to such redistribution. Slovakia and the Czech Republic could then receive about three tanks per month from the beginning of 2024 instead of deliveries this year.
