Germany says it is not ready for large-scale cyber attacks

Apr 2, 2024

Germany is not sufficiently prepared for a potential large-scale cyberattack because it lacks a functioning crisis management system.

The head of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) warned about this on Sunday, Euractiv reports.

Despite the increasingly tense international security situation and hybrid threats from Russia, Germany has not yet experienced a large-scale cyberattack on critical infrastructure.

But Claudia Plattner, head of the agency responsible for combating cyber attacks, warned that Germany would lack the tools to adequately respond to such an attack.

Plattner called on the government to make cybersecurity a priority "before something big happens and, for example, ATMs go down".

"Why do we always have to learn from mistakes? We know that this topic is incredibly important," she said.
