Germany cannot supply Ukraine with battle tanks alone, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.
"With all that we do, we will not act alone," Scholz stressed in an interview with Deutschlandfunk radio on Saturday, September 17.
This is how he reacted to the calls from Ukraine, the Christian opposition parties in Germany, as well as some representatives of the ruling German coalition to provide Ukraine with Leopard combat tanks.
According to Olaf Scholz, Germany is already among the most important suppliers of armaments to Ukraine and, by giving it the Panzerhaubitze 2000 SAU, sent Kiev the most modern equipment, which is used in the war against Russian aggression.
"It was those armaments that we provided that played a decisive role in making possible the successes that Ukraine is achieving," the German chancellor emphasized.-
Disputes in the ruling coalition over the supply of tanks
Olaf Scholz reminded that only the USA, Great Britain and Germany provided Ukraine with multiple rocket launchers (MLRS). He also stressed that neither Washington, nor London, nor Paris supplied Kiev with Western-made tanks. At the same time, the chancellor pointed out that the FRG government, thanks to circular deliveries with the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Greece, took care to provide Ukraine with Soviet-made combat tanks.
Deliveries of Leopard tanks to Kiev have for many weeks been a topic of dispute between the Social Democrats, Free Democrats and the Greens, members of the ruling coalition in Germany.
Lars Klingbeil, chairman of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), also spoke out in an interview with Reuters in favor of agreeing on tank deliveries with international partners.
"I believe that we have to reassess the situation together every day. The fact that the Western alliance is united and that we are closely aligned with the Americans, the French and the British is very valuable. It is clear to the federal government that we cannot take steps alone," Klingbeil explained.-
