It will be difficult for Russia to rebuild its radar stockpile

Mar 31, 2023

Restoring the arsenal of counter-battery radars will be a difficult task for Russia, as these systems depend on the supply of high-tech electronics that have been sanctioned.

According to Yevropeiska Pravda, this is stated in an intelligence review by the British Ministry of Defense on Friday.

On March 23, 2023, the Special Operations Forces of Ukraine released footage of the destruction of the Russian Zoo-1M counter-battery radar in the Donetsk region, the British agency reminds.

Throughout the war, both sides have been focusing their efforts on neutralizing enemy counter-battery radars. These systems are relatively few, but they are a significant force multiplier. They allow commanders to quickly detect enemy artillery and strike it.

However, because these systems have an active electromagnetic signature, they are vulnerable to detection and destruction. Russia has lost at least six Zoopark-1M SAMs and probably has a very limited number of them left in Ukraine, the review noted.

"Rebuilding the arsenal of counter-battery radars is likely to be a key priority for both sides, but Russia is likely to face difficulties as these systems depend on high-tech electronics supplies that have been interrupted by sanctions," the British Defense Ministry said.
