It will be difficult for the Ukrainian military to hold their positions in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, which can be attacked from several sides. At the same time, the duration of their retention depends on the number of forces that Russia will have to redeploy from the front to Ukraine.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to The New York Times.
The publication cites the opinions of two experts: retired Major General Mick Ryan, Senior Research Fellow for Military Studies at the Australian Lowy Institute, and Serhiy Kuzan, head of the independent research group Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation.
They say that Kyiv will need to expand or hold its gains in western Russia long enough to force Moscow to move significant forces off the battlefield in Ukraine.
But holding a position that can be attacked from several directions will be difficult, analysts say. Kuzan noted the vulnerability of a fixed Ukrainian position to Russian air strikes. According to him, this dynamic “immediately encourages the use of aircraft, guided bombs and ballistic missiles.”
