Italian fighter jets based in Lithuania were taking off to intercept an unidentified aircraft in the airspace of the Baltic States.
This was reported by Evropeiska Pravda with reference to the Italian Ministry of Defense.
Italian Eurofighter Typhoon fighters took off from the Siauliai base in northern Lithuania after receiving an order from the NATO surveillance center in Germany.
The Italian defense ministry did not provide any details about the incident, including the type of aircraft involved.
Italy took over command of NATO's air mission in the Baltics in August. This is the ninth time the country has led the air mission.
The mission, which has been in place since April 2004, involves 17 Allies who protect the airspace of the Baltic republics.
