Lukashenko de facto acknowledged Russia's participation in the war

Oct 4, 2022

Self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko de facto admitted Belarus' participation in the war of Russia against Ukraine but pointed out that it was mostly of a non-military or "defensive" nature.

The Belarusian state news agency BELTA quoted him as saying.

"As for our participation in the special military operation (quote according to the original. - Ed.) in Ukraine - we take part there, we do not hide it. But we are not killing anyone. We are not sending our troops anywhere, we are not violating our obligations," Lukashenko said.

He insists that Belarus' participation is to prevent the conflict from spreading to its territory and to prevent a blow to Belarus under the cover of a special military operation by Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia.

"Yes, we treat, treat people, if necessary. Yes, we feed people, and not only Russians. Most of all we feed those refugees, poor, poor people who come to us from Ukraine 400-500 people a day. How can we not feed and treat them? This is our participation in this military operation, there was no other and will never be," said Lukashenko.
