French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Chinese President Xi Jinping to reason with Russia and help end the war in Ukraine.
This was reported by Reuters.
At talks in Beijing, Macron said that the West should engage Beijing to help end the war and prevent a spiral of tension that could split the world into warring blocs.
"Russian aggression in Ukraine has dealt a blow to international stability. I know that I can count on you to bring Russia to its senses and bring everyone back to the negotiating table," Macron said, standing next to the Chinese president at the beginning of their meeting.
In comments after his meeting with Macron, Xi Jinping called for talks between the two sides and a political solution to the war in Ukraine.
The talks were frank and constructive, the Elysee Palace said, while Beijing said the discussions were friendly and in-depth.
Macron also asked Xi to press Russia to comply with international rules on nuclear non-proliferation.
The Chinese leader said that all countries should respect nuclear non-proliferation, without mentioning Russia.
