In February, the European Commission announced that it was launching an initiative together with Poland to address the issue of Ukrainian children taken to Russia. The aim of the initiative is to find the children and bring to justice those responsible for their removal.

"The European Commission is launching an initiative with Poland, under the leadership of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, concerning Ukrainian children. We are aware of the dramatic situation of Ukrainian children who are being taken by Russia and put up for adoption. It is believed that since the beginning of the invasion, Russian forces have taken thousands of Ukrainian children to Russia," European Commission spokesperson Dana Spinant said in February.
