Orban: We have never been so close to a world war

Mar 10, 2023

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban believes that the likelihood of the war in Ukraine escalating into a global conflict is growing.

He said this on Friday morning on Kossuth radio, as quoted by Telex.

"A year ago, we all hoped that this armed conflict would not escalate into a real war, but the war is much more brutal and violent than when it began," Orban said in response to reports that the first Leopard tanks had been sent to Ukraine.

Orban noted that Hungary and the Vatican are the only states in Europe that stand for peace.

"International public opinion is sharply divided. There is the West, and then there are others: Turks, Arabs, Chinese, Africans, who are calling for a ceasefire and peace talks," he added.

Orban said that Western leaders are in a war fever.

"The Germans started with helmets, now they are on tanks, and now they are talking about sending fighter jets," he said.

Orban also did not rule out that Western countries could send their military to Ukraine and warned that the risk of a world war had become very close.

"We have never been so close to a local war turning into a world war," he said.
