Pentagon chief cancels deal with organizers of September 11 attacks

Aug 5, 2024

Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin has canceled the pre-trial agreement with three defendants in the case of organizing the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, which was announced earlier.

This is stated in a statement by Austin, cited by Yevropeiska Pravda.

The Pentagon confirmed the information about the agreement, but did not disclose details. It was assumed that the deal almost certainly included a plea in exchange for the abolition of the death penalty.

However, Austin stripped Susan Escalier, who oversees the Pentagon's military court at Guantanamo Bay, of the authority to enter into pre-trial agreements in this case and took responsibility himself.

"Effective immediately, using my authority, I am rejecting three pretrial agreements," Austin wrote in a memo.
