Petteri Orpo sees no prerequisites for opening the border with Russia

Aug 2, 2024

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo believes that there is no possibility of reopening the border with Russia.

He said this in an interview with Iltalehti.

"At the moment, I still believe that there are no opportunities for opening," Orpo commented on the issue of the possible opening of border crossing points on the eastern border.

He is pleased with the adoption of the so-called expulsion law, which under certain conditions allows for the restriction of asylum applications. However, according to the Prime Minister, the eastern border can only be opened when Russia changes the nature of its actions toward migrants.

"We need to be sure that Russia is ready to return to the previous model of cooperation, where both countries allow only those people who have the proper documents to cross the border," he said.
