Poland, as well as Ukraine's partner neighbors, are obliged to shoot down Russian missiles in Ukrainian airspace before they enter NATO airspace.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the Financial Times, which quoted Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.
As Sikorski explained, Poland must ensure the safety of its citizens, despite fears that interception over Ukrainian territory could allegedly draw NATO into a full-scale war between the Russian Federation (RF) and Ukraine.
“Membership in NATO does not cancel the responsibility of each country to protect its own airspace - it is our own constitutional duty... I personally believe that when enemy missiles are heading for our airspace, it will be legitimate self-defense, because when they cross our airspace, the risk that the debris could injure someone is significant,” he added.
In response to Sikorsky's statement, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană said that NATO should do everything possible to help Ukraine, while avoiding escalation. He also added that within the military-political bloc, “we always consult before doing anything that could have consequences for all of us.”
