Polish FM calls to allow exhumation of Volyn victims as soon as possible

Sep 3, 2024

After several days of silence, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski called on Ukraine to allow the search and exhumation of Poles killed during ethnic cleansing in Volyn during World War II as soon as possible.

According to Yevropeiska Pravda, he said this in a video message posted on his X (Twitter) account.

In the caption to the address, Sikorski noted that Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba “made a mistake” in his resonant answer to a question during a meeting with Polish youth in Olsztyn. “Our compatriots deserve to be buried. Ukraine must understand the dark pages of its history. However, from his (Dmytro Kuleba's) answer, one can understand that during our bilateral conversations I have already raised the issue of the need to resume exhumation,” Sikorski said.

He reminded that Poland will have a say in the decision to close negotiating chapters on Ukraine's path to the EU.

“Therefore, it is better for Ukraine to resolve this issue as soon as possible in the spirit of gratitude to Poland for what we are doing for Ukraine today,” added Sikorski.
