The Russian military command has repeatedly exaggerated the territorial success of the Russian army in the war against Ukraine.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to a report by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
This time, analysts mentioned Russian Security Council Secretary and former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. Experts noted that he has exaggerated Russia's successes in Ukraine since mid-June 2024.
In particular, on August 6, Shoigu said that Russian troops had captured 420 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory since June 14, 2024, when Russian dictator Vladimir Putin announced his uncompromising demands for Ukraine's surrender as a precondition for the so-called "peace talks."
The institute writes that it has found evidence confirming that Russian troops have seized about 290 square kilometers since June 14, not 420 as Shoigu said.
The analysts also note that the Russians increased the intensity of their attacks in the Toretsk sector on the night of June 18 after generally being inactive on this frontline during 2024.
