Russians caused an environmental disaster at the Zaporizhzhia NPP

Oct 31, 2022

Russian occupiers at the Zaporizhzhia NPP have provoked an ecological disaster. The actions of the Russians will lead to the death of thousands of tons of fish.

This is reported with reference to the Ukrainian energy company Energoatom.

As a result of the shutdown of the NPP power units, warm water does not get into the cooling pond. Therefore, the water temperature dropped to about +13 degrees Celsius.

Energoatom explains that the pond is inhabited by two types of fish: warm-water tilapia and Asian catfish, which were brought in about 25 years ago to ensure environmental cleanliness. The fish serve a certain sanitary function, destroying green algae and ensuring that the turbine’s condenser cooling tubes are clean.

“Under favorable conditions, when winter temperatures never dropped below +18 degrees, the fish were breeding. So, if the water temperature in the cooling pond does not rise soon, about a thousand tons of dead fish will be thrown ashore,” the report said.

It should be recalled that Zaporizhzhia NPP went offline due to shelling on October 17.
