Portuguese Parliament Speaker Augusto Santos Silva arrived in Kyiv on Tuesday for an unannounced visit, the first Portuguese official of this level to visit Ukraine since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.
Santos wrote about this on Twitter.
The speaker of the Portuguese parliament noted that he was visiting Ukraine at the invitation of his Ukrainian counterpart Ruslan Stefanchuk. He was accompanied by a delegation of representatives from almost all Portuguese parliamentary parties.
During the visit, Santos is scheduled to meet with the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, and students of the Institute of Philology of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv who study Portuguese.
In addition, the Speaker of the Portuguese Parliament met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during which, as he posted on Twitter, he expressed the Portuguese Parliament's support for Ukraine in defending its independence and territorial integrity.
In turn, Zelenskyy wrote on Facebook that he had discussed with the Portuguese side cooperation on Ukraine's integration into the European Union and NATO and the priority needs of Ukrainian defenders.
Separately, the President thanked the Portuguese authorities for supporting Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, as well as the Portuguese society, which was united in supporting our country and people.
