The German Air Force, along with its Swedish counterparts, was scrambled by Russian fighters near the Latvian border the day before.
This was reported by Bild, according to Yevropeiska Pravda.
German and Swedish planes were lifted into international airspace over the Baltic Sea off the coast of Latvia because of Russian fighters, which were not initially identified.
Two German Eurofighter jets and two Swedish planes were scrambled as a precautionary measure to establish contact with the Russian pilots as the planes were heading towards Latvia.
The Russian planes were apparently flying in connection with an exercise involving Russian warships.
According to a German Air Force spokesperson, the Russian fighters had their transponders turned off and the pilots did not respond to radio requests.
In addition, the flight plan of the aircraft was not communicated in advance, as is usually the case in the Baltic Sea region.
