May 25, 2023

Deputies from the Moldovan ruling party Action and Solidarity (PAS) have registered in parliament a bill to rename Victory Day on May 9 to Remembrance Day, which is proposed to be celebrated on May 8.

This was reported by NewsMaker.

According to the draft law, PAS MPs propose to rename Victory Day to Remembrance and Reconciliation Day in memory of those who died in World War II. At the same time, commemorative events in Moldova, as well as in European countries, will be held on May 8.

The authors of the initiative believe that this is necessary in order to move to the interpretation and perception of some historical events related to World War II in Moldovan society without the accompanying ideology.

At the same time, the authors of the project note that it does not aim to harmonize national legislation with that of the European Union.

The PAS initiative will be discussed at a parliamentary meeting on Thursday, May 25.
