The US aircraft carrier, the world's largest warship, calls at Oslo

May 24, 2023

The USS General Ford, the world's largest warship, arrived in Oslo on Wednesday.

This was reported by the Norwegian Armed Forces, Yevropeiska Pravda reports.

The USS General Ford nuclear-powered aircraft carrier entered the Oslo Fjord accompanied by a Dinghy speedboat with armed men on board. The Norwegian Armed Forces said that this event gives them "a unique opportunity to further develop cooperation and work more closely with our most important ally, the United States."

According to the order, any vessels must stay half a kilometer away from the aircraft carrier, and a no-fly zone has been established over the area where the carrier is stationed.

The launch of the ship, which is called the largest aircraft carrier in the world, was broadcast live on Norwegian public television. Viewers watched the ship's entry from land, some with binoculars.

The ship will stay in the Norwegian capital until Tuesday. After that, it will take part in exercises with the Norwegian armed forces.

In early May, the US Navy announced that the ship had left Norfolk, Virginia, for its first combat deployment after a shorter two-month deployment in the fall of 2022.

The Russian Embassy in Oslo said that such demonstrations of force look illogical and harmful.

Several thousand US soldiers will be stationed in Oslo in connection with the destroyer's arrival. In total, the ship accommodates about 2,600 sailors, 600 fewer than on previous-generation aircraft carriers.
