The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, in cooperation with the President's Office, have returned 2,235 people to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
According to Ukrinform, Deputy Minister of Defense Hanna Malyar reported this in her Telegram.
"The exchange and treatment of prisoners of war is another proof of the civilized nature of the Ukrainian state, even in the face of such a devastating war. Once again, we have great news. Another 130 Ukrainian defenders were released from Russian captivity on Easter," Malyar said.
According to her, on February 24, 2022, for the first time since the beginning of the war, that is, since 2014, Ukraine organized the process of exchange and treatment of prisoners of war in full compliance with international law.
"For the first time, this process has become fully official and open as far as security allows. In the spring of 2022, all the necessary laws, resolutions, and orders were promptly adopted and a new effective civilized state mechanism for the exchange and treatment of prisoners of war was launched," Malyar emphasized.-
On March 11, 2022, the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War was established at the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine. The headquarters coordinates the activities of more than ten state institutions involved in the exchange and treatment of prisoners of war.
Conditions have been created for the detention of enemy prisoners of war in compliance with all the requirements of the Geneva Conventions.
The logistics of enemy prisoners of war from the moment of detention to delivery to the camp are regulated. Several law enforcement agencies are involved in this process, and the area of responsibility of each is enshrined in the law.
"The topic of the exchange requires silence for the sake of the safety of our military who are in enemy detention centers. Therefore, there is not much to say here. However, the results speak for themselves. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine Coordination Headquarters in cooperation with the Presidential Office have returned 2235 people to Ukraine," emphasized Malyar.-
