US freezes cooperation with Russia on nuclear arms treaty

Jun 2, 2023

On June 1, the United States suspended providing Russia with information about its missile arsenal and ballistic missile launches under the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START III), which Moscow "suspended" in February 2023.

This is stated in a statement by the US Department of State.

As the State Department emphasizes, the so-called suspension of START III by the Russian Federation is legally invalid, and therefore, it violates the treaty by failing to fulfill many of its obligations.

"The US countermeasures are fully consistent with international law. They are proportionate, reciprocal and comply with all other legal requirements. International law allows such measures to encourage a state to return to fulfilling its international obligations," the statement emphasizes.

Starting June 1, the United States will stop providing Russia with the notifications required by START III, including information on the status and location of objects subject to accounting under the Treaty, such as missiles and launchers.
