Aug 7, 2024

On the 16th anniversary of the 2008 Russian-Georgian war, the United States recalled that Russia still occupies 20% of Georgian territory and expressed support for Tbilisi.

According to Yevropeiska Pravda, this statement was published by U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

The secretary of state reminded that August 7 marked the 16th anniversary of the Russian-Georgian war and is a day of remembrance for those who died, suffered, or were forced to leave their homes because of these events.

"At this time, Russia continues to occupy 20% of Georgia's territory and imposes its rules on the local population, including the announcement of the transfer of strategically important lands in Abkhazia to Russia and preparations to establish a permanent naval base in the city of Ochamchire," Blinken said.

He emphasized that the United States continues to unwaveringly support Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

"We call on Russia to fulfill its promises and obligations under the 2008 ceasefire agreement, withdraw its troops to the positions they held before the conflict, and allow unimpeded access for humanitarian aid," Blinken said.
