Stoltenberg explains main problem preventing Ukraine from joining NATO

Apr 30, 2024

All NATO allies have declared that Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance. This requires appropriate action and approval from all member states.

This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, according to a message from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Telegram.

"All allies have declared that Ukraine will be a NATO member. And we need to move towards this goal. We need to work hard to ensure that you are fully interoperable and meet all NATO standards. So that when the political decision comes, you can do it," Stoltenberg said.

According to the NATO Secretary General, the problem now is that when a state is invited to become a member of the treaty, it is necessary not just a majority of 32 allies, but all allies must agree to this decision.

"And at the moment we have not reached such an agreement. This is the reality," he explained.
