Stoltenberg: Ukraine's trust in NATO allies has been undermined

Apr 30, 2024

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg believes that delays in the supply of military aid from NATO members have affected Ukraine's trust in them and that NATO's increased role in this process could resolve the situation.

Stoltenberg said this in an interview with Reuters after a visit to Kyiv the day before.

According to the secretary general, Ukraine's trust in its NATO allies has been undermined by delays in the provision of weapons, and such failures indicate the need to reconsider the coordination of international military assistance to Kyiv.

“We need a more robust, institutionalized framework for our support to ensure predictability, greater accountability, and burden sharing,” Stoltenberg said.

He reiterated his idea to create a multi-year plan that would clearly define the contribution of each Ally to Ukraine.

Responding to the concerns of some NATO members, Stoltenberg emphasized that the money would be a “tiny fraction” of what the United States and its allies have spent in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“There we are talking about trillions, and in Ukraine, we are talking about billions. But in fact, we are dealing with a real challenge to our security - a more aggressive Russia,” he emphasized.
