Ukraine's trust in NATO undermined by failure to fulfill promises

Apr 30, 2024

NATO countries have not fulfilled all of their promises to supply weapons to Ukraine. This situation has undermined Kyiv's confidence.

According to RBC-Ukraine, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this in an interview with Reuters.

The secretary general reminded that the United States could not allocate new funding for several months to continue helping Ukraine because of disagreements in Congress. At the same time, European countries have handed over far fewer shells to Ukrainian defenders than they had promised earlier.

According to Stoltenberg, these developments led to Russia gaining the initiative, and Ukrainian defenders were forced to go on the defensive.

"Of course, the fact that we did not fulfill our promises undermined trust," the Secretary General said.

But, as Stoltenberg clarified, Kyiv continues to believe in its allies, and now everything depends on them.

The Secretary General emphasized that, against the backdrop of such supply failures, Western countries need to reconsider the format of assistance to Ukraine.

"We need a more robust, institutionalized framework for our support to ensure predictability, accountability, and burden sharing," Stoltenberg said.

What is the role of the NATO secretary general? Other than stating the obvious. He doesn't decide anything.
