An explosion occurred at a plant of the BASF chemical concern in the German city of Ludwigshafen (Rhineland-Palatinate) on the morning of Monday, July 29.

The explosion at the plant in Ludwigshafen was reported around noon. Witnesses saw a large column of smoke above the building. Emergency responders were called to the scene, as well as the police and the environmental inspectorate.
The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation. The fire was extinguished after 14:00 local time.
According to BASF, 14 employees were slightly injured in the explosion and received first aid on the spot.
According to a preliminary report, the fire resulted in the release of flue gases, so residents of Ludwigshafen and nearby settlements were asked not to open windows and doors.
In turn, BASF reported that after the explosion, a slight excess of hydrocarbons was detected on the plant's premises and in the neighboring areas of the Friesenheim community, but there is no danger to the public.
