On Monday, July 29, U.S. President Joe Biden announced proposals for Supreme Court reform and constitutional amendments, which, among other things, provide for the restriction of immunity for former state leaders.
This is stated in a statement on the White House website.
The Biden administration emphasized that the recent ethics scandals surrounding the Supreme Court raise the need for its reform so that “no one - neither the president nor the Supreme Court - is above the law.”
They outlined three proposals, one of which calls for an amendment to the US Constitution to remove the former president's immunity “for crimes committed while in office.”
“The amendment, entitled 'No One is Above the Law,' would specify that the Constitution does not grant any immunity from federal criminal prosecution, trial, conviction, or punishment based on prior service as president,” the statement said.
Two other proposals relate to limiting the term of office of US Supreme Court justices to 18 years (currently there is no such limit) and creating a binding mechanism for judges to adhere to a code of ethics (the code was developed last year, but there are no sanctions for violating it).
