The interim government of Bulgaria at a meeting on Wednesday, July 31, approved the continuation of humanitarian aid for people who have arrived from Ukraine since the beginning of Russia's illegal invasion of the country in 2022.
This is reported by The Sofia Globe.
The Bulgarian government has decided to extend the humanitarian aid program for displaced Ukrainians until December 31, 2024.
The humanitarian aid scheme provides for state payments to places of accommodation for people who fled the war in Ukraine and received temporary protection in Bulgaria in accordance with a European Commission directive.
It was first introduced by the government of Kiril Petkov in 2022 and has been extended several times since then, most recently until July 31.
According to the latest official information, more than 2.4 million Ukrainians have entered Bulgaria since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Of these, more than 181,000 have been granted temporary EU protection in the country, and more than 55,000 remain in Bulgaria.
