The Bulgarian party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), which took third place in the last parliamentary elections, may be expelled from the group of liberals in the European Parliament because of its sanctioned leader, Delian Peevski.
This was reported by the Bulgarian service of Radio Liberty, according to Yevropeiska Pravda.
It has become known that several member parties of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Europe (ALDE) - from the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Slovakia - sent a letter to the leadership calling for increased monitoring of DPS co-chairman Peevski, who has long been a controversial political figure and has been sanctioned by the United States and Britain for corrupt influence.
The text of the letter contains hints that Peevsky's continued membership in the ALDE is in question.
ALDE Secretary General Diedrik de Schezen confirmed in a commentary to BNR that this is indeed possible and noted that the situation is "very serious," including because of the split in the DPS.
The letter became known against the backdrop of a conflict within the Bulgarian political force between Peevski and the honorary chairman of the party, Ahmed Dogan. On Thursday, the former expelled all MPs who were supportive of Dogan from the parliamentary faction, a day after Dogan called for Peevski's resignation as co-chairman of the political party.
