Eva Kalmus, head of the Border Guard Directorate of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board, said that the border with Russia could be closed very quickly after the government's decision.

She said this in a comment to Yle.

Kalmus made her statements against the backdrop of an increase in the number of border crossings at the Narva checkpoint after Finland closed its checkpoints on the border with Russia.

Currently, an average of one thousand more people cross the Estonian-Russian border per week than before Finland's decision.

Kalmus notes that Estonia could follow Finland's example.

"We ask people not to travel to Russia. Those who have already traveled to Russia may find themselves at a dead end when it will be very difficult to return," she said.

According to Kalmus, such a decision can be made very quickly: Checkpoints on the Estonian border could be closed within an hour of the government's decision.
