European Union foreign ministers intend to disregard the foreign affairs summit in Budapest in August by organizing their own "formal" summit at the same time.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Politico.
Hungary, which holds the EU Council presidency, plans to hold a foreign affairs summit in Budapest on August 28-29.
But after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban obstructed aid to Ukraine and met unauthorizedly with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, many foreign ministers are looking for a way to avoid another of what they see as Orban's propaganda shows.
According to three EU diplomats, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell will convene ministers for a "formal" foreign affairs council at the same time as Orban's summit.
"If there is a formal foreign affairs council organized by High Representative [Borrell] on the same day, the ministers will not be able to go to Budapest," said one diplomat.
Another added that by boycotting the meeting in Budapest, the other foreign ministers want to "send a clear message that Hungary does not speak for the EU."
