North Atlantic Alliance planners consider it unlikely that Russia will openly invade a neighboring NATO member state in the near future.

This was reported by The Wall Street Journal.

However, some military officials in NATO countries have recently said that Moscow could become strong enough to attack in a few years.

In the shorter term, they fear that Moscow could provoke a conflict in neighboring countries by stirring up local Russians and using the tensions as a pretext to intervene, as the Kremlin did in eastern Ukraine a decade ago.

At the same time, the publication notes that one of the most serious disagreements in the alliance is the difference in the views of member states on threats. NATO cites terrorism and Russia as its main threats.

Many officials in Turkey and other member states along the Mediterranean are more concerned about regional conflicts, illegal migration, and terrorism than Russia.
