Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced that he is nominating Oliver Varghese, who has been European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy for the past 5 years, to the new European Commission.
Orban wrote about this on Monday on the social network X (Twitter), according to Yevropeiska Pravda.
The head of the Hungarian government said that after recent consultations with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, he was re-nominating Oliver Varghese for the position of European Commissioner.
“Over the past five years, Commissioner Vargey has proven that the EU can be a positive force in its neighborhood and beyond. He will do an excellent job in the future European Commission,” Viktor Orban said.
EU diplomats have reported that Budapest still hopes to get the enlargement portfolio in the new commission, although it is rare for a country to keep the same person in the same position.
