Russian border guards on Wednesday, July 31, officially ended their service at the Armenian Zvartnots airport, which had lasted since 1992.
This was reported by Radio Azatutyun.
An official farewell ceremony was held at Zvartnots, during which representatives of Russia and Armenia signed a protocol on the transfer of state border protection at Zvartnots airport to the Armenian side.
The commander of the Armenian border troops, Edgar Unanyan, said that “the experience and knowledge transferred by Russian border guards over more than 32 years of joint service will continue to be used in the service of the homeland.”
The legal status of the Russian border guards in Zvarnots, who had been there for more than three decades, was not fully defined. Moscow referred to an agreement with Yerevan from 1992, but it does not mention the deployment of Russians at this particular airport.
